What is Sulforaphane?

According to Wikipedia, sulforaphane is an anti-cancer,
anti-diabetic, and anti-mircrobial compound. Sulforaphane
can be found in cruciferous vegetables such as brussel
sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, kale,
collards, broccoli sprouts, Chinese broccoli, broccoli raab,
kohlrabi, mustard, turnip, radish, rocket, and watercress

Reactive oxygen species are important mediators that exert
a toxic effect during ischemia-reperfusion injury of various
organs. Sulforaphane is known to be an indirect antioxidant
that acts by inducing Nrf2-dependent phase 2 enzymes.  An
in vitro study suggested that sulforaphane could be used as
an effective adjunct for the prevention of renal oxidative
insults during ischemia-reperfusion injury. [2]

What are the health benefits of sulforaphane?

The major advantage of sulforaphane is its potential benefit
in cancer prevention. Fimognari C and Hrelia P at University
of Bologna, Bologna, Italy stressed the cancer-preventive
activity of isothiocyanates in Cruciferous vegetables in their
review scientific article. The most characterized
isothiocyanates is sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is able to
simultaneously modulate multiple cellular targets involved in
cancer development, including: (i) DNA protection by
modulating carcinogen-metabolizing enzymes and blocking
the action of mutagens; (ii) inhibition of cell proliferation and
induction of apoptosis, thereby retarding or eliminating clonal
expansion of initiated, transformed, and/or neoplastic cells;
(iii) inhibition of neoangiogenesis, progression of benign
tumors to malignant tumors, and metastasis formation.
Sulforaphane is therefore able to prevent, delay, or reverse
preneoplastic lesions, as well as to act on cancer cells as a
therapeutic agent. Taking into account this evidence and its
favorable toxicological profile, sulforaphane may offer
advantage or benefits in chemotherapy or preventive
measures. [1]
