A scientist works on ghrelin and its applications.
|
Ghrelin is an endogenous ligand for the growth hormone
secretagogue receptor.
Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide hormone in which the third amino
acid, usually a serine but in some species a threonine, is modified by
a fatty acid; this modification is essential for ghrelin’s activity. In this
respect, ghrelin is the first known example of a bioactive peptide
modified by an acyl acid. This small peptide hormone is released
primarily by the stomach and then by lower parts of the
gastrointestinal tract.
Ghrelin, considered the counterpart of the hormone leptin, acts as an
appetite stimulator. It increases prior to and decreases after a meal.
Studies have shown that this hormone promotes increased food
intake, weight gain and adiposity in rodents.
One interesting finding about ghrelin is that people suffered from the
eating disorder ‘‘anorexia nervosa’’ or “cancer-induced cachexia”
appear to have high plasma levels of ghrelin.
Since the discovery of this hormone, researchers investigated its the
stimulatory effect on the food intake and its role in the modulation of
energy expenditure. In past, researchers already found ghrelin in
tissues of animals such as humans, rat, pig, mouse, gerbil, eel,
goldfish, bullfrog and chicken. And, ghrelin has a highly conserved
amino acid sequence (especially at N-terminal region) across all
animal species studied.
A while ago, Dr. Suleyman Aydin, Firat University, Turkey, found
ghrelin in the salivary glands of human subjects. Recently, this
research group reported the presence of a peptide with ghrelin-like
activity in plants, such as Prunus x domestica L. and Marus alba by ,
radioimmunoassay analysis. They also found fruits from both plants
had higher levels of the peptide than the vegetative parts.
About Dr. Suleyman Avdin
Dr. Suleyman Aydin hold a Ph.D. degree from Illinois Instute of
Technology, Chicago (1999). Dr. Suleyman Aydin’s research areas
include molecular cloning and various aspects of biochemistry and
physiology. Dr. Suleyman Aydin is an Assistant Professor in the
Department of Clinical Biochemistry at Firat University Medical School
(Turkey), his research work focuses on the application of ghrelin as a
therapeutic agent on various types of chronic diseases such as
cancers, and its potential use as a diagnostic tooling for certain types
of cancers.
